Massaua (Eritrea) – 1969

“Massaua, also known to geographers as Badi, is a small island that was later named Metzauà. This name probably derives from the fact that Metzauà means ‘call’ in the Tigrè language as one had to call loudly for a boat if one wanted to reach the island from the mainland (now the peninsula of Gherar). It was with a similar name (Macua) that the island came into contact with the West from around 1520 when it became part of the Islamic world under the Sultanate of Dahlak”.
